NY HELPS Qualifications: A New York State Professional Geologist's license and current registration and a bachelor' degree or higher in earth science, engineering geology, environmental geology, environmental geosciences, geochemistry, geological engineering, geology, geological science, geophysics, or hydrogeology.This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply. At a future date, it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in an NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.
The duties that the incumbent of the vacancy will be expected to perform. Duties Description The Professional Geologist will be employed within the Department of Engineering and will be responsible for specialized work related to all Capital Program projects that have potential geological elements. The incumbent will provide extensive support to Maintenance forces for oversight of rockslide repairs and corrective/preventative work activities. The Incumbent will provide critical professional services in order to maintain the safety and operation of the Thruway, and to perform geology design/construction support services. Duties will include, but not be limited to the following: Analyzing the results of investigations, field or laboratory procedures, geologic reports, and geophysical data and providing recommendations to address needsConducting periodic condition inventory of all rock slopeMaking recommendations pertaining to rock slope designs and foundation designs of structuresEvaluating the suitability of blasted bedrock for alternative usesConducting soil and groundwater evaluations including the development or analysis or geologic and hydro-geologic investigations, reports, studies and management plans and oversight of water well contractorsPreparing specifications and developing testing and quality assurance for mineral aggregatesProviding construction support for the Thruway Capital Program projects and provision of assistance to the Department of Maintenance and Operations related to potential geological issues.Travel may be required, some of which may be overnight.
